Border review – into the woods for a body-horror romance 4 5 Ali Abbasi’s dark drama focuses on transgression and taboo as two troubled people living on the edge of society develop a strange Tina and Vore's unnatural oddity might challenge our expectations about normalcy if "Border" wasn't set in an obnoxiously dour world filled with child pornographers and worse, one that brings to mind bleak chic Nordic noir like the "Millennium" trilogy, "The Killing," and "Jar City." In a world of human monsters, Tina and Vore's eccentricities are supposed to make them human; in reality, they just look weird and creepy.

This might just be the most challenging film review I’ve had to write in decades. The best thing would be to go and see Border knowing nothing more than that it won the prize for most innovative film at Cannes. Don't watch the trailer, and definitely don’t read those lazy reviewers who complete their word count by writing a detailed synopsis ruining every reveal and plot twist.
